Hearing aids range widely in price, style, features, and capability. Those with mild-to-moderate hearing loss can consider hearing aids available over-the-counter (OTC) without needing an in-person exam or prescription. OTC hearing aids are typically less expensive than prescription devices.

Yet even among OTC hearing aids, there is a vast difference in pricing and capability. When we tested hearing aids, we were often disappointed in budget-friendly brands that lacked sound quality, features, and customization options. However, Lexie proves to be an outlier, offering hearing aids at a competitive cost, with a step-by-step setup process, a range of features, and excellent customer support at less than half the price of prescription hearing aids. While Lexie’s OTC hearing aids aren’t a solution for those with severe or profound hearing loss, they are affordable and effective for many people. We feel confident recommending Lexie hearing aids.

We deeply researched and tested these devices for our Lexie hearing aid review. Read on to discover what we learned.

Why we recommend Lexie hearing aids

When we reviewed Lexie and other hearing aid brands, we concentrated on these key factors:

  • Customer experience
  • Affordability
  • Easy setup and use
  • Included features
  • Trial period and warranty
  • Brand reputation

Lexie has three main hearing aid models: the Lumen, the B1, and the B2 Plus. All three devices are Bluetooth-enabled, offer preset listening environments, and noise and feedback cancelation. Both the B1 and the B2 Plus are powered by Bose.

Lexie partnered with Bose, the American manufacturing company known for audio equipment, in 2022 when the FDA approved the sale of OTC hearing aid devices. The two brands released a joint statement explaining their partnership’s goal to make hearing aids more accessible and affordable. The collaboration aims to elevate Lexie’s sound quality and tuning technology in its B1 and B2 models. Bose is also credited for bringing their self-fitting, programming, and controlling technology to Lexie’s devices.

While Lexie’s sound quality is impressive, what we love the most about Lexie is its helpful and knowledgeable customer service staff.

Lexie’s devices do have some potential drawbacks. Only the B2 Plus includes a rechargeable battery, which requires a charge every 18 hours. The B2 Plus is also the only Lexie device offering phone call streaming. However, all three Lexie devices use Bluetooth to connect to the Lexie app to adjust the hearing aids and access customer support.

Lexie Lumen

Lexie Lumen

  • Cost per pair: $699
  • Weight: 4 grams (gm)
  • Type of hearing aid: Behind-the-ear (BTE)
  • Color options: Gray, beige, silver, or metallic black
  • Degree of hearing loss: Mild to moderate
  • Rechargeable battery? No
  • Bluetooth Streaming? No

Our experience with the Lexie Lumen

At only $699/pair, the Lexie Lumen is among the more affordable hearing aid options for OTC devices, which can cost upwards of $3,000.

The user manual and mobile app for the Lexie Lumen make it easy to get the devices working and customized. The app requests you take a brief in-app hearing test, which lasts about 5 minutes. Once you complete the test, the hearing aids automatically calibrate based on your results.

The Lumen arrives at your door pre-programmed with six listening settings designed to improve your hearing in different environments and noise levels. Switching between settings is easy and intuitive.

Lexie Hearing App: Lumen listening environments

The Lexie app makes it easy to switch your listening settings based on your environment.

Lexie’s preset listening settings include everyday, noisy indoor, outdoor, and music.

The Lexie Lumen is the brand’s only device with a telecoil. This setting is convenient in a public place with an induction loop, allowing you to access sound from a speaker system. Many public facilities, such as theaters, museums, and places of worship, have induction loops that transmit sound to telecoils, enabling you to stream sound from the speakers directly to your hearing aids.

Using Lexie’s Companion Mic setting requires purchasing the companion mic accessory, which costs $129 through the app or the Lexie Hearing website. The companion microphone connects to your hearing aids via Bluetooth and can be held, clipped onto, or placed in front of the person you want to hear speaking. It can be helpful in meetings, lecture halls, or other large gatherings where background noise can get in the way of hearing clearly.

While the Lumen doesn’t come with extras like Bluetooth streaming or rechargeable batteries, it does offer a nice range of features for people who don’t need a device that can be programmed for challenging listening needs.

For example, if you consistently need high or low sound frequencies to be amplified more than the standard Lumen settings allow, look at the B1 or B2 Plus. These let you make fine-tuning adjustments to their listening settings, while the Lumen only lets you select from the standard settings.

How to change settings on the Lumen

You can change the Lumen’s volume and listening settings using buttons on the hearing aid or the Lexie Hearing app. It’s worth noting that this is the only Lexie model with buttons on the hearing aids for making settings adjustments. While you can change the volume using buttons on the B1 and B2 Plus, all settings adjustments must be made through the app.

When our team tested the Lumen, we found the buttons stiff, difficult to push, and quite small. While wearing the hearing aids, it was easier to change the volume and settings by holding the hearing aid with one hand and pressing the button with the other. The quickest way to make changes was simply to use the app.

If you’re uncomfortable using an app to manage your hearing aid, you might want to consider another top OTC brand such as Eargo, which allows you to make adjustments by tapping the hearing aids, or MDHearing, which offers several models that don’t connect to an app.

How large is the Lumen?

The Lexie Lumen is slightly larger than other BTE hearing aids we’ve tested. We wondered whether the extra length would make it visible behind our ears. However, it’s still a discreet hearing aid that sits comfortably behind the ear, even when wearing glasses. People with longer hair will have no problem hiding it.

Lexie B1 Powered by Bose

Lexie B1

  • Cost per pair: $749
  • Weight: 3 g
  • Type of hearing aid: Receiver-in-canal (RIC)
  • Color options: Gray
  • Degree of hearing loss: Mild to moderate
  • Rechargeable battery? No
  • Bluetooth Streaming? No

Our experience with the Lexie B1

At only $50 more than the Lumen, the B1 has advanced technology from the brand’s partnership with Bose. As “self-fitting” hearing aids, the B1 allows users to make more precise adjustments, customize preset listening settings, or create new ones based on their preferences.

The B1 and B2 Plus include four preset listening environments to get you started:

  1. Everyday
  2. Noisy indoor
  3. Outdoor
  4. Music

Lexie Hearing App for B1 and B2 Plus

The Lexie hearing aid app carefully walks you through setting up your devices.

If you have worn hearing aids before and are comfortable using an app to make fine adjustments to your devices, the B1 is a fairly priced option. We found the app easy to navigate, but if you have any trouble, you can contact the Lexie support team through the app or by phone. We called Lexie multiple times with questions about their products, and we found the staff to be friendly, helpful, and supportive every time.

Fine-tuning adjustments in the app include:

  • Treble and bass: To make sound brighter (treble) or deeper (bass)
  • Balance: To adjust the volume of the left and right hearing aids individually
  • Directionality: To change the amount of sound that is picked up in front of you (with the “front” setting) or all around (with the “everywhere” setting)

You can also choose a suggested setting (numbers 1–4 above) and use the fine-tuning adjustments to make small changes. For example, you might select the noisy indoor setting at a restaurant, which causes the directional microphones to pick up more sound in front of you so you can hear conversations better. If you want to hear conversations all around you, go to the directionality setting in the app and change it from “front” to “everywhere” so the microphones can pick up sound behind and to the side, as well as in front of you.

Lexie B2 Plus Powered by Bose

Lexie B2 Plus

  • Cost per pair: $999
  • Weight: 3 g
  • Type of hearing aid: Receiver-in-canal (RIC)
  • Color options: Gray
  • Degree of hearing loss: Mild to moderate
  • Rechargeable battery? Yes
  • Bluetooth Streaming? Yes (iPhone only)

Our experience with the Lexie B2 Plus

The B2 Plus has many features we like in the Lumen and B1, like directional microphones, background noise reduction, and feedback management. Additionally, the B2 Plus has an enhanced charger for recharging your hearing aids on the go and an in-app hearing test with recommended settings.

The B2 Plus has the same four customizable listening environments tailored to your preferences as the B1. You’ll want to adjust these to suit your hearing profile and save your changes. While some may appreciate the DIY fine-tuning, it can also pose challenges for first-time users or those less tech-savvy. For example, tweaking treble and bass could over-amplify certain sounds depending on your hearing loss.

The B2 Plus comes with four sets of tips in different sizes, which can change the way your hearing aids feel inside your ears and may affect the way sound travels into your ear canal. If the default tip falls short, you can swap them out to find the optimal fit for your ear shape. If you can hear but still struggle to understand speech, call Lexie to talk to a support team member, who can suggest adjustments for improved performance.

Charging your Lexie B2 Plus hearing aids

Lexie B2 Plus hearing aids use a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that gives you up to 18 hours of power on a three-hour charge. As shown in the photo above, the charging case has magnetic ports. When you set each hearing aid in the case, the magnets help them snap into place. The right hearing aid and port are marked red, and the left is blue, so it’s easy to see where to place each device.

We were impressed with the strong contact between the B2 Plus devices and the charging ports. The Lexie charging case also displays a blinking light when the hearing aids are charging and a steady light when fully charged. This small but important feature assured us the hearing aids were charging.

Several hearing professionals have told us that some patients with prescription hearing aids have had trouble getting their devices seated in the charger. As a result, when they put their hearing aids in the batteries are sometimes dead.

How much do Lexie hearing aids cost?

Lexie hearing aids start at $699 per pair for the Lumen, a BTE model with disposable batteries and six preset profiles. The cost goes up to $999 per pair for the B2 Plus Powered by Bose, a self-fitting RIC device with rechargeable batteries.

These prices are lower than those of some OTC brands, such as Audicus, which offers the additional benefit of enhanced Bluetooth streaming but costs up to $2,798 per pair. Another example is Eargo, which doesn’t offer Bluetooth streaming but also has models costing nearly $3,000.

Lexie financing

Lexie doesn’t have traditional financing, but the company now partners with Klarna, allowing you to have flexible payment options.

Lexie Rewards

Lexie Rewards, available with the Lumen and B1 models, is a unique feature among hearing aid companies. The free program earns you points as it helps you get used to wearing your hearing aids, provides learning activities, and encourages you to interact with Lexie experts in the first 45 days of owning your devices.

The Lexie Hearing app tracks your hearing aid use each day, so it’s necessary to connect your devices to the app to earn points each day as you complete activities and connect with the Lexie team.

Lexie app and accessories

We enjoyed using the Lexie Hearing app and found it easy to navigate. We were also impressed by how many features it has. Not only can you make volume and settings adjustments, you can also:

  • Connect your hearing aids to your phone with Bluetooth
  • Shop for accessories such as batteries and tubes
  • Contact the audiology team for help
  • Check the battery life of your hearing aids
  • Earn and use Lexie Rewards points
The Lexie hearing aid app offers multiple options for volume control.

Lexie accessories

The Lumen and B1 come with four packages of disposable batteries and extra tips, so you can find the ones that fit the best. The B2 Plus also comes with four sizes of domes: three pairs of closed domes and one pair of open domes.

Hearing instrument specialists noted that dome style and size affect the comfort of your hearing aids, the sound quality, and the amount of feedback you hear. The Lexie manual does a nice job of explaining when you should try a different size or style of dome. Still, if you can’t get a good fit or feel you’re not hearing as well as you’d like with the hearing aids, contact the Lexie customer support department for a video or phone call to get help from a hearing specialist.

Lexie sells a Companion Mic to help you hear conversations better in loud environments. You can also purchase extra tubes, domes, batteries, and cases on the website or through the app.

To help extend the life of your hearing aids and protect them from moisture, Lexie sells an electronic hearing aid dryer for $59. It uses a combination of warm air and UV light to dehumidify and disinfect your devices. Remember that to apply Lexie Rewards points to your purchases, they must be made through the app.

Lexie hearing aids: trial period, warranty, and care

Trial period

Most states require a minimum 30-day trial period for customers to get used to their new hearing aids and return them if they’re not a good fit, according to the HLAA. But Lexie goes one step further and gives you 45 days to test them. Get as much support from the company’s team as needed, and ensure they meet your needs before committing.

Warranty

Lexie hearing aids come with a standard one-year warranty covering manufacturer defects. You can also purchase the protection plan, adding coverage for breakage or other damage

Price per pair$72

How to clean

To clean your Lexie Lumen hearing aids, thread the thin wire (included with your purchase) through the silicone tube. Then, use the small brush that’s included to clean any wax off the dome. Use a soft cloth to wipe the body of your hearing aids, and they’ll be ready to wear again.

The B1 and B2 Plus hearing aids should be wiped off daily with a dry cloth. Use the included brush to clean the domes, then place them in the charging case each night. The rechargeable B2 Plus model also has wax guards beneath the domes to protect the inner parts of the device from ear wax. The manual states that these need to be changed every three months, and we found swapping out old guards for new ones to be quick and easy.

How to store

The user manuals for the Lumen and B1 say to store your hearing aids with the battery door at least halfway open. This will preserve battery life by turning the hearing aids off and allowing moisture to escape.

Lexie Lumen and B1 hearing aids come with drying capsules that can also remove moisture from your hearing aids, prolonging their life. Place your hearing aids and one drying capsule in an airtight container overnight or when not in use. The manual says that one capsule should last between one and three months. You can order more capsules on the Lexie website or through the app.

The B2 Plus hearing aids should be stored in the closed charging case and plugged into an outlet when you’re not wearing them. Lexie warns that storing them in an unplugged charging case can cause the batteries to die.

Water resistance

While Lexie devices have a water-resistant coating, they aren’t waterproof. You’ll need to take them out before showering, swimming, or doing outside activities that could cause them to get wet.

If you want a hearing aid that won’t be damaged by water, Jabra Enhance and Eargo make water-resistant hearing aids. But while they can withstand rain, sweat, and most likely the shower, they should not be submerged. The prescription brand Phonak also makes a waterproof hearing aid called the Lumity Life, which can be submerged in water up to half a meter.

How to return

Lexie accepts returns within 45 days of purchasing hearing aids, but you will need to pay the shipping fees to mail them back to the company.

Who Lexie hearing aids are for

Lexie could be a great choice for some people’s hearing and lifestyle needs, but it may not be the ideal hearing aid for everyone. Lexie devices, like all OTC hearing aids, are meant for adults 18 and older with mild to moderate hearing loss. We also recommend them for those comfortable with technology, as they’re designed to be used with the Lexie Hearing app to get the full benefit.

If you’re new to hearing aids, the Lumen may be your best choice. The hearing aids automatically adjust based on your hearing test results when you first get them. From that point on, you can use the buttons on the hearing aids or the app to select a listening profile and change the volume.

It might take a few tries to successfully make the fine-tuning adjustments needed to achieve the correct B1 and B2 Plus profile. Lexie offers remote support if you need help.

What to consider before buying hearing aids

Degree of hearing loss

The first factor to consider before buying any hearing aid is your degree of hearing loss, as determined by an in-person hearing exam. If you are an adult diagnosed with mild to moderate hearing loss, you may be a great candidate for an OTC hearing aid like Lexie.

Bluetooth use

All Lexie devices connect to the Lexie Hearing app with Bluetooth to make adjustments and contact customer service. You can’t stream music or movies through these hearing aids, but you can stream phone calls from an iPhone with the B2 Plus model.

Your comfort level with technology

All Lexie models are designed to be used with the app, which allows you to adjust the volume and listening settings, shop for accessories, and contact the hearing specialist team for remote hearing aid support. The Lumen has buttons for adjustments, and the volume on the B1 and B2 Plus can also be changed with a button, but you won’t get full use of these hearing aids without the app. You can find devices that don’t use an app on our best hearing aids list.

For instance, you won’t be able to take the initial hearing test on the Lumen app, which means you’ll lose out on the automatic hearing profile adjustment. You also won’t be able to do any fine-tuning on the B1 or B2 Plus.

If you’re more comfortable with a hearing aid that doesn’t require an app to access all of its features, we recommend one of two other types of hearing aids. You could choose a simpler (and less expensive) OTC hearing aid that doesn’t come with an app, such as some models offered by MDHearing or Audicus. Keep in mind that these hearing aids, like the Lexie Lumen, most often come with only a few preset listening profiles, which may or may not meet your hearing needs based on the listening environments you’re often in.

If you are frequently in places that make it hard to hear and understand conversations, such as noisy restaurants or theaters, crowded places, sports events, or areas with loud equipment running, a prescription hearing aid may be a better fit. Even if you have mild or moderate hearing loss, your lifestyle and daily routine could mean you’ll be happier with a prescription device because they can be programmed more precisely for different listening environments.

Are disposable or rechargeable batteries better?

Lexie’s Lumen and B1 models use size 312 zinc-air disposable batteries—four packs are included with your purchase. Each battery lasts up to four days and has about 14 hours of daily use. After removing a new battery from the package and pulling the tab off, let it sit for two to three minutes before putting it into your hearing aid. This can help ensure you get maximum life out of the battery.

We found the disposable batteries challenging to change due to their small size, although the battery doors were easy to open and snapped shut securely. If you have reduced vision or limited hand dexterity, consider the rechargeable B2 Plus model instead.

While many people in our survey listed rechargeable batteries as one of the top features they wanted in a hearing aid, we also conducted a focus group of users. There, we heard feedback from people who prefer disposable batteries. For example, one drawback of rechargeable hearing aids is that you’ll have to wait for them to charge (up to three hours in some cases) when the batteries die. Disposable batteries can be changed out quickly. It took us less than a minute to change the batteries in two hearing aids.

Another comment we heard from people who like to travel is that it’s easier to carry disposable batteries, and you can buy more at any pharmacy or grocery store.

One last point about battery type: Models with disposable batteries are typically less expensive than ones with rechargeable batteries. But remember that you don’t need to buy batteries with a rechargeable model, which will save you money over time.

While disposable batteries last only a few days before needing to be replaced, rechargeable batteries are designed to last the hearing aid’s life, typically about five years. If a rechargeable battery dies while the hearing aid is still under warranty, you should be able to get it replaced at no cost. If it dies after the warranty has expired, it’s usually best to buy a new hearing aid, as rechargeable batteries are expensive. The cost of new rechargeable batteries varies but generally starts at $500 per pair. To replace your rechargeable battery, you’ll need to send your hearing aid to the manufacturer, as these updates must be performed in a lab.
