Key Takeaways

  • Adjustable beds like GhostBed offer positional options that can help with reduced mobility, chronic pain, digestive issues, poor circulation, sleep apnea, and snoring.
  • You can customize your bed with a variety of foot positions and head elevation capabilities.
  • Both models of the GhostBed adjustable bed offer similar features, but the split king offers perks for couples.

Older adults may struggle to get a good night’s sleep for various reasons, from chronic pain to a partner’s snoring. According to Healthline, sleep disorders in older adults are fairly common, with roughly 50% of people aged 55 and older having problems falling asleep and maintaining sleep. Causes can stem from medications, health conditions, sleep disorders like sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome.

Opting for a bed with an adjustable base can help improve your quality and length of rest. An adjustable bed can help ease pain and pressure as you sleep, while also reducing snoring. But with various models on the market, how do you know which bed to choose?

GhostBed, best known for its cooling mattresses and shipping a “mattress in a box,” offers several sizes of adjustable bases, including twin XL, queen, and a split king. One of these may be a great fit for you or a loved one seeking restful sleep and relaxation. The team at GhostBed used their expertise to create their own version of an adjustable bed, featuring 100% steel construction, built-in massage capability, under-bed lighting, remote-control operation, and more.

Let’s dive into the details to see if a GhostBed Adjustable Base is ideal for you or your loved one.

What Is an Adjustable Bed?

While the way an adjustable bed works specifically is dependent on the model, generally, a motorized base works to elevate the head and feet of the bed providing you with a variety of sleeping position options. They are typically controlled by remote, which allows you to change your position at the push of a button. Many advanced models will also sync to your smartphone so you can control the bed through an app. Often, these frames offer additional features such as massage zones, snore settings, and zero-gravity positioning. The mattress, which is separate from the base, sits atop the base. Most adjustable bases have retainer bars at the foot and sometimes the head of the base to keep mattresses from slipping during movement.

By reducing pressure on your body, an adjustable bed can make sleeping more comfortable. In addition, head elevation can help to reduce snoring (which is good for the snorer and whoever is sleeping beside them), while lifting your feet promotes blood flow. An adjustable bed can also reduce acid reflux and alleviate breathing issues like sleep apnea by slightly propping your head up throughout the night.

What Is GhostBed?

GhostBed is a popular, Florida-based brand that sells mattresses known for its cooling technology and adjustable beds. Marc Werner, CEO of GhostBed, formed the company after having three neck surgeries and dealing with chronic pain. When he couldn’t find any comfortable mattresses and pillows, he ended up creating his own. The company’s first adjustable base was introduced in 2017 when the founder decided to create an adjustable bed that had customized features but at a lower price.

The GhostBed Adjustable Base is a great option if you’re looking to customize your sleeping experience or simply lounge or recover in comfort. Made from 100% steel, the base features a steel retainer bar at the bottom of the bed, which keeps your mattress safely in place. You don’t have to worry about your mattress moving around when you shift position or wake up—or cause accidental falls when you get out of bed. A mattress that stays in place also makes it easier to stand up, especially if you’re in pain or have balance issues.

Additionally, several special features can help improve sleep for older adults. For example, the bed’s zero-gravity feature ensures that pressure is spread evenly throughout your body, which can help alleviate back and neck pain. Zero gravity is also beneficial for breathing, proper blood circulation, and digestion.

With a quick touch of a button, you also can experience a head and foot massage with three intensities and three modes. Set the timer, sit back, and relax. The remote is easy to use and even works as a bedside flashlight in case you need to reach for a glass of water in the middle of the night. Similarly, a nice feature of the GhostBed Adjustable Base is its under-bed LED lights, which can help you find your slippers or avoid falling when you get up at night.

With the GhostBed Adjustable Base, you can conveniently charge your devices as you sleep, so they are powered up and ready to go the next day. The four USB ports face downwards, so any cords will stay out of the way, and you won’t have to worry about tripping over them or getting tangled up. Other features include anti-snore and TV positioning as presets.

The GhostBed Split King Adjustable Base stands out as a great option for couples who want to adjust their mattress independently. Two separate motors allow each person to adjust their side of the bed to their customized needs. For example, if one person wants their head at an incline, but the other likes to lie a bit flatter, each person can choose their own elevation. When one side is inclined, it doesn’t affect the other side at all. The split king base provides the features listed above but with a bonus—since you need two twin XL mattresses for the GhostBed Split King, you get two handy remotes. Each person using this bed can easily customize their side of the bed to suit their needs. Or, if you sleep alone, you can sync the remotes so the base functions as one king-sized bed.

Who Can Benefit From Buying an Adjustable Bed?

Anyone seeking comfortable, customizable sleep can benefit from buying an adjustable bed, but adjustable beds are especially great for:

Arthritis: Arthritis can cause inflammation, tenderness, and pain in the joints. An adjustable bed can help reduce pressure on joints and provide relief.

Caregivers: If you’re a caregiver, an adjustable bed can help you easily position your loved one’s sleeping surfaces to suit their unique needs, while also reducing the burden on you to lift and move patients who can’t do so themselves.

Chronic pain: Added pressure on the sciatic nerve or incorrect spinal support during sleep can cause or worsen back and neck pain. While the Mayo Clinic recommends back sleepers wedge a pillow under their knees and a rolled-up towel at the small of the back, an adjustable bed can remove the need for these props. Adjusting the bed into a zero-gravity position with legs and head slightly raised gives a feeling of weightlessness and reduces pressure on the spine.

Digestive issues: Elevating the head while sleeping is recommended for anyone who has experienced acid reflux issues or GERD at night. By elevating the head, the acid can’t as easily wash back up into your esophagus, which is what creates discomfort.

Helpful features: Adjustable beds come with an array of useful features beyond the ability to adjust position. Massage settings can provide muscle relaxation, and under-bed lighting makes it easier to safely walk around the room if you have to get up in the middle of the night for any reason.

Poor circulation: People who suffer from poor circulation may experience worse circulation at night. That’s because lying flat can make it more difficult for the heart to pump and circulate oxygenated blood throughout the body. This can lead to tingling and swelling in the legs. Elevating your feet higher than your heart promotes better circulation and improves blood flow, easing edema (swelling) and improving varicose vein symptoms.

Sleep apnea: People with sleep apnea often stop breathing several times during the night for several seconds at a time. This is usually caused when the muscles and tissues in the mouth relax and fall to the back of the throat, blocking the airway. Elevating the head of an adjustable bed can prevent the tissues in the mouth from blocking the airway during sleep.

Sleeping with a partner: Specifically, a split adjustable base means you can elevate your head or feet (or both), while your partner can adjust the bed to their comfort, whether that’s keeping the bed flat or adjusting the elevation to their own specific needs.

Snoring: If you or your partner snore, an adjustable bed also allows you to elevate your body at just the right position to reduce positional-related snoring and breathing issues.

TV watchers and readers: If you’re looking for extra support while watching TV or reading in bed, raising the head of an adjustable base places you in a sitting up position without the hassle of pillows.

*Response From GhostBed

When we asked GhostBed about the complaints found on third-party sites, a spokesperson noted that they sell 1,000 beds a day and that the reviews only make up a small percentage of the customer experience.

“We have a senior customer service team that is fully dedicated to responding to third-party review sites. We have personally responded to every BBB complaint over the last year. The global pandemic has given our family business a lot of unforeseen challenges to have to deal with. However, as a company dedicated to customer service, we are taking on several initiatives to improve the experience. If you recall the pandemic left over 5,000 container ships stuck at sea. So, while we had 20 years of supply chain management experience, we did get served with a lot of logistics curve balls. Overall 90% of our product shipped on time as expected. Currently it’s more like 99% ship on time.

In the past year, GhostBed has improved with customer communication. If there are product delays, we send out emails, giving the customers multiple options on how to proceed with their order. There is a specialized team and dedicated email that deals with product delays and customer service regarding product delays.

GhostBed is fully transparent with our customer to show our terms prior to purchase, and on the customer’s order confirmation email. Even though we adequately provide this information, customers do not always read our 101 Night Sleep Trial policy before purchasing, and most likely do not read it after requesting a return. While we do everything we can to provide a positive experience, we need to have some rules and policies in place to guide our small family business.

Many of these reviews are driven by information found on every product page to our FAQs and covered in our Return Policy. GhostBed sends out very detailed emails prior to a customer returning their mattress under our 101 Night Sleep Trial. After a customer’s items are returned, their refund amount is emailed to the customer, with expectations of when their refund will be processed.

Delays on returns can relate to things outside of our control. Such as when the customer returns all items, to when our shipping providers return all the items back to our warehouse. Once the refund is issued to the credit card, we cannot control the delay from the credit card provider to show the funds back into the customers bank account.

Overall, we want to work with our customers to ensure the best night’s sleep. We also want to make sure a quality GhostBed mattress does not end up in a landfill so that we can work with the customer to give it a proper new home.

GhostBed is a family business with family values, and we treat all our customers equally, politely, and as a part of our extended family.

If a customer feels that we were rude, then we have a process in place to escalate the phone call or communication to be reviewed internally. As we record all phone calls and document all web chats to email communication. In the rare instances where this has happened, appropriate actions were taken by their direct supervisor. We also have a service team that monitors calls and provides extensive training to ensure our company’s family values.”
