A Guide to Avocado Bed Frames

Gone are the days of being forced to lie completely flat on your mattress. For older adults, adjustable beds provide a versatile way to age in place comfortably. Sleep is essential to achieve the best state of physical and mental health according to the American Thoracic Society, and adults 65 years and older need seven to eight hours of sleep. Adjustable beds give you the power to change your sleeping position with the touch of a button, which can help reduce pain, relieve pressure, and improve circulation. If the adjustable bed has an anti-snore option, it can also make for a more peaceful night for you or your bedtime partner. Some adjustable beds only allow you to elevate your head, while others provide the ability to adjust your leg position. Some, like the Avocado bed frames, can do both.

Avocado offers three adjustable bases—the Eco, Eco Plus, and Eco Pro—all of which have similar construction, but different features. Below, we’ll dive into the details and highlight the pros and cons of each to help you decide which model is right for you.

Senior Bedroom Modifications for Aging in Place

Construction & Design

When choosing an adjustable bed, older adults who are aging in place will likely seek solid construction that allows for long-term use. Avocado bed frames offer this stability. All three adjustable base models consist of a sturdy metal frame that sits on top of solid rubberwood legs. The Eco and Eco Plus models have adjustable legs—you can set them at 4, 8, and 12 inches—but the Eco Pro has fixed legs. The Eco Pro also has retainer bars situated at the end of the base, rather than in the corners like the other two models.

All of the adjustable base metal frames are wrapped in 100 percent GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool stuffing. This upholstery sits on top of plywood decks that can hold up to 850 pounds.

The Eco Pro adjustable base includes an upholstered frame, but the Eco and Eco Plus come without one. You can add a headboard to your purchase for an additional $1,299 to $1,798, depending on your preferred size. If you add a headboard, you’ll get one that’s made of sustainable, 100 percent reclaimed wood. Instead of buying a headboard through Avocado, you can also attach your own.

Features

All three Avocado adjustable beds share some common features that will come in handy for older adults seeking comfort and convenience. Each model allows for head and foot adjustment and comes with under-bed LED lighting, three massage settings, and a remote with a built-in flashlight. Every base also has built-in USB charging ports, so you can plug your phone right into the bed.

For all models, if you need a split king adjustable bed, the base will arrive as two separate twin XL units. You can operate each side independently, or you can sync them together if you want both sides to move in unison.

Additionally, each adjustable base comes with several unique features, which we’ll explore in more detail below.

The Avocado Eco is the entry-level adjustable base and has the lowest profile of the bunch. It’s the only adjustable base in the Avocado lineup that has both anti-snore and zero-gravity settings. You can operate these settings using the remote or a free app.

One thing worth noting: The Eco doesn’t have head tilt or wall-hugging features. While the head of the base does raise, you can’t adjust the angle for extra neck support. Older adults who like to read or watch TV in bed may want to opt for the Eco Plus instead.

The Avocado Eco Plus is the upgraded version of the Eco, offering additional perks including wall-hugger, head-tilt, and lumbar adjustment features. The wall-hugger feature keeps the head of the bed close to the wall as you change positions, which makes it easier to reach over to your nightstand. The head-tilt feature provides extra support for your neck, while the lumbar adjustment is great if you have back pain. This model also offers seat extension, which helps eliminate the bunching that can happen in the middle of the mattress with some entry-level adjustable beds.

The Eco Plus only has one preprogrammed position—anti-snore. It doesn’t have a zero-gravity option like the Eco and the Eco Pro.

The Avocado Eco Pro has a lot of the same features as the other two models, but the standout here is the TV Mode preset position. If you like to watch TV in bed, you can press a button on the remote and the bed will automatically adjust to support your head and neck, putting you in an ideal viewing position. The Eco Pro also has a zero-gravity preset position, but it lacks the head tilt feature of the Eco Plus.

Mattresses Compatible With the Avocado Adjustable Base

Home to the Avocado Green Mattress, one of three mattress brands in the world to be MADE SAFE Certified, each adjustable base is compatible with any of Avocado’s green mattresses—standard, pillow-top, or latex. The adjustable bases will also work with mattresses from other brands, as long as they’re memory foam, latex, or a hybrid model that combines foam and wrapped springs.

Innerspring mattresses are generally too stiff for adjustable bases. If you have a traditional innerspring mattress that sits on top of box springs, you’ll probably want to get a new mattress when you purchase an adjustable base. Box springs are not compatible with any adjustable bases.

Compatible Avocado Bed Frames

The Eco and Eco Plus adjustable bases have a basic design that makes them compatible with any Avocado bed frame. You can also use your own bed frame if you already own one that you love. If you don’t want a full bed frame, you can simply add a headboard at checkout for an additional cost.

Since the Eco Pro is an adjustable base and upholstered bed frame in one, you can’t use it with an additional bed frame, including the ones that Avocado offers.

Set-up

All Avocado adjustable bases include upgraded, in-home delivery at no extra cost to you. After you order your adjustable bed, Avocado will send it to a third-party shipping partner that will call you to set up a four-hour delivery window on a day that’s convenient for you. Once the delivery team arrives, they will unbox your base and assemble everything for you.

If you purchase the Eco Pro adjustable base, the delivery team will also remove your old mattress (if desired) for no additional charge.

Price

The pricing of Avocado adjustable bases depends on the size and the model. The Eco and Eco Plus are available in twin XL, full, queen, king, split king, and split California king, while the Eco Pro is only available in four sizes—twin XL, queen, split king, and split California king.

Warranty

All three adjustable bases are backed by a 20-year warranty, but you should be aware of the fine print. Some parts, such as the adjustable metal frame, are covered for the entire warranty period, while others are only protected for a year or two. For example, the electronics, electrical components, drive motors, Wi-Fi module, power cords, and massage motor are only covered for two years.

Additionally, the warranty only covers labor for one year. If you have to get a defect fixed after that time, Avocado will supply the parts, but you’ll need to pay out of pocket to have someone repair the base.

Trial Period

Unlike Avocado mattresses, which come with a one-year trial, the adjustable bases are final sale. You can only return the base if there’s a defect in the workmanship.

Why Choose an Avocado Adjustable Bed Frame?

Avocado bed frames offer a great way to transition to an adjustable bed without a lot of fuss. The bed frames have a minimalist design and aren’t clunky like other adjustable beds. Each model also comes with a backlit remote with one or two preset positions that make it easy to operate the bed. And since the purchase includes free in-home setup, you don’t have to worry about putting the bed together yourself. This may be especially useful for older adults with limited mobility. Additionally, adjustable bed’s elevation settings can help with back pain, snoring, sleep apnea, circulation, gastroesophageal reflux disease, acid reflux, and make it easier for you or your loved one to get in and out of bed.

Bottom Line

Older adults or users with limited mobility may find that an Avocado adjustable bed is the best option to help people sleep better despite medical conditions and chronic pain. It’s no secret that sleep is important for everyone. But according to Your Guide to a Healthy Sleep from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, growing evidence shows that a chronic lack of sleep increases your risk for obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and infections.

For older adults seeking an adjustable bed frame, Avocado offers three options—the Eco, Eco Plus, and Eco Pro. The Eco is the entry-level model with a lot to offer, including two preset positions, anti-snore and zero gravity settings, and a massage feature. The Eco Plus is an upgraded model offering head tilt, lumbar support, and wall-hugger features. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for extra support in your adjustable base. The Eco Pro is both an adjustable base and upholstered bed frame. It offers many of the same features as the Eco Plus, but it lacks the zero-gravity feature.

Avocado’s adjustable bases offer you the choice to select the right one for you, so that you can get a healthier, good night’s sleep.

Some older adults, particularly those with chronic pain, may find that adjustable beds improve sleep.
